Donskoy Cat History & Origin
The breed began in 1987 when Elena Kovaleva rescued a blue-tortoiseshell kitten named Varvara in Rostov-on-Don. Varvara later lost hair and produced kittens that showed the trait, demonstrating inherited rather than contagious hair loss. Breeder Irina Nemykina developed her descendants into the Don Sphynx, known by TICA as the Donskoy.
Varvara is the foundation cat of the breed.
The name Don refers to the Don River and Sphynx to the hairless appearance.
The Donskoy's hair-loss inheritance differs from that of the Canadian Sphynx.
