Nebelung Cat History & Origin
Cora Cobb developed the breed after two blue longhaired kittens appeared in litters of her son's black domestic cat Elsa: Siegfried in 1984 and Brunhilde in 1985. Their 1986 litter established the program, and geneticist Solveig Pflueger helped adapt a standard based on Russian Blue type and early Russian longhairs.
Siegfried and Brunhilde were named for figures in the Nibelungenlied and became the first registered foundation pair.
Russian Blue was designated as an outcross, and longhair-carrying Russian lines later expanded the gene pool.
TICA accepted the early new-breed program in 1987 and recognized Nebelung for championship competition in 1997.
