Lost your pet in Leander?
What to do in the first hour
Start close to where your pet was last seen. Walk the area slowly, call their name in a calm voice, and bring treats and a familiar toy. Stay quiet and patient, because a frightened pet may not come out for a stranger.
Post an alert here so neighbours can see it and add sightings on a map. Print posters and put them up within 1 km of where your pet was last seen: street corners, shops and vet clinics. Share the alert in local Facebook groups and neighbourhood chats.
Then make the calls in the next section. Come back to this page every day and check the found reports, because the person who has your pet may already have posted.
Who to call in the United States
Report your pet as lost to their microchip company. The AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup (petmicrochiplookup.org) will tell you which company holds the record.
File a lost report with your local animal shelter or animal control, and visit in person every couple of days. Ring nearby vets.
If you have found a pet, most vets will scan for a microchip for free. Keep one detail to yourself, such as a mark or a scar, and ask anyone who claims the pet to describe it. If you cannot keep the pet, your local pound or shelter will take it in.
Lost cats behave differently
A lost cat often does not behave like a lost dog. Frightened cats tend to hide close to home, stay silent and may not come when called, even for their owner.
Check sheds, garages and under decks near where your cat was last seen, and ask neighbours to look in theirs. Search again in the evening and at night, when it is quiet and cats are more likely to move. Call their name softly and wait.
Leave a familiar bed or something that smells of home near the door, and keep checking back. Post an alert here with a clear photo, and look through the found reports every day.
