Bully Kutta History & Origin

The Bully Kutta is an ancient landrace breed with roots in the Punjab and Sindh regions of the Indian subcontinent, dating back centuries. The name is believed to derive from the Hindustani and Punjabi word 'Bohli', meaning 'heavily wrinkled', and 'Kutta', meaning 'dog'. Historically, these dogs were prized by royalty and nobility for their strength and courage, used as powerful guard dogs and for hunting large game. It's believed they descended from ancient mastiff-type dogs, possibly with influence from breeds brought to the region by invading armies.

The Mughal emperor Akbar was known to own a Bully Kutta that he used for hunting.

The breed was historically a favorite pet of ruling families in regions like Thanjavur.

An 'Indian Mastiff' was showcased at the Second International Dog Show in London in 1864, indicating its presence and recognition outside of its native land even in the 19th century.

The breed's historical use, including for the illegal sport of dog fighting in some areas of India and Pakistan, has contributed to its reputation for aggression.

Today, there are efforts by some breeders and organizations in India to focus on scientific breeding and preserve the original temperament and characteristics of the breed.
