Gaddi Kutta History & Origin

The Gaddi Kutta is named after the Gaddi nomadic shepherds of the Himalayas who bred them for centuries to protect their flocks from predators like snow leopards. The breed is considered to be a descendant of the Tibetan Mastiff. Recently, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR) has officially recognized the Gaddi dog as an indigenous breed. The breed is considered to be on the verge of extinction due to the dilution of its gene pool.

The breed is named after the Gaddi tribe of Himachal Pradesh.

They are also known as the Indian Panther Hound or Mahidant Mastiff.

The Gaddi Kutta was developed to guard encampments and livestock from predators.

There is concern that the breed is facing extinction due to a lack of dedicated breeding programs.
