Choosing a groomer in Asheville

Asheville's groomers range from neighborhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that work from your driveway. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.

Experience matters more than paperwork

North Carolina's Animal Welfare Section licenses shelters, pet shops, boarding kennels and dealers; groomers are not on that list, so ask how long the groomer has worked, where they trained and whether they groom your breed often. A groomer that also keeps dogs overnight is a boarding kennel and needs that state license, which the department says also applies to in-home boarding.

Your dog's license

The City of Asheville's animal ordinance requires dogs living within the city limits to be licensed every year, and every dog must have a city license by the age of six months. The city says the license tag and a current rabies tag must be displayed on the dog at all times. Cats are not required to have a city license. Groomers will also ask for proof of rabies vaccination.

Winter cold and road salt

Asheville winters bring cold snaps and salted roads. The city warns that outside pets are among the most vulnerable in extreme cold and that dogs are at particular risk of salt poisoning from rock salt, often when licking it from their paws. Wipe your dog's paws after walks, and ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed so ice and salt do not build up. In summer, book early-morning appointments, never leave your dog in a parked car, and for double-coated breeds such as huskies and shepherds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave.

Before the first appointment

  • Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
  • Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
  • Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
  • If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dog grooming cost in Asheville?

It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.

Do groomers in North Carolina need a license?

The state's Animal Welfare Section licenses shelters, pet shops, boarding kennels and dealers, and groomers are not on that list. Ask about the groomer's experience and training instead, and a groomer that boards dogs overnight needs a boarding kennel license.

Does my dog need a license in Asheville?

Yes, if your dog lives within the city limits. The City of Asheville requires a city dog license by six months of age, renewed every year, and the license tag and a current rabies tag must be worn.

How do I protect my dog's paws in winter?

Wipe your dog's paws after walks on salted roads, and ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed so ice and salt do not build up. Dog boots help on long walks.

Is mobile grooming a good option?

A mobile groomer works from a van at your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a drive, though it usually costs more than a salon.

What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?

Groomers will ask for proof of rabies vaccination, and many also ask for DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough). Ask before you book.
