Choosing a groomer on the Gold Coast
The Gold Coast's groomers range from neighbourhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that park outside your home. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.
Your dog's registration and microchip
The City of Gold Coast says all dogs must be registered from 12 weeks of age or within 14 days of coming into the city to live, and that dogs must be microchipped and wear a registration tag at all times in public. Its registration period runs from 1 September to 31 August, with renewal notices issued in August. The City also says a household can keep two dogs, and you need an excess animal permit to keep more. Groomers often ask for proof of vaccination, so keep it handy along with your registration tag number.
Paralysis ticks
Paralysis ticks are a serious risk for dogs on the south-east Queensland coast. In October 2025 University of Queensland researchers, who studied more than 10,000 tick cases at vet hospitals in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Sydney's northern beaches, reported that the paralysis tick was found on the head, neck or ears in 73 per cent of dog patients, and advised searching there first. Signs include a changed voice or behaviour and wobbly back legs. Ask your groomer to tell you if they find a tick during a groom, and talk to your vet about year-round tick prevention.
Out and about with your dog
The City of Gold Coast asks dog owners to keep dogs on a leash and under effective control unless they are in a designated off-leash area, and to keep dogs from harming or contacting koalas, with special rules in designated koala areas. Beach and park trips mean sand, salt water and burrs, so a regular wash and a check of the paws and coat afterwards is a good habit.
Heat and humidity
Gold Coast summers are hot and humid. Book early-morning appointments, keep your dog out of parked cars, and for double-coated breeds such as huskies and shepherds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave.
Before the first appointment
- Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
- Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
- Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
- If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does dog grooming cost on the Gold Coast?
It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.
Does my dog need to be registered on the Gold Coast?
Yes. The City of Gold Coast says all dogs must be registered from 12 weeks of age or within 14 days of coming into the city to live, and must be microchipped and wear a registration tag in public. The registration period runs from 1 September to 31 August.
How many dogs can I keep at home?
The City of Gold Coast says a household can keep two dogs, and that you need an excess animal permit to keep more than two. Check the City's page for the current rules.
How do I protect my dog from paralysis ticks?
Talk to your vet about year-round tick prevention and search your dog every day, starting with the head, neck and ears, where University of Queensland researchers found most ticks. Tell your vet straight away if you see a tick or notice wobbly back legs.
Is mobile grooming a good option?
A mobile groomer works from a van outside your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a trip across town, though it usually costs more than a salon.
What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?
Each groomer sets its own rules. Many ask for proof of vaccination, and some also ask about kennel cough. Check before you book, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
