Choosing a groomer in Perth
Perth's groomers range from neighbourhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that park outside your home. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms. Listings are mostly in the City of Perth area and the inner suburbs.
Dog registration in Perth
The City of Perth says all dogs over three months of age need to be registered, that State Government regulations require registered dogs to be microchipped as well, and that registration is due by 1 November each year; one-year, three-year and lifetime registrations are offered. The City's pets page adds that owners of unregistered dogs can be fined on the spot by council rangers. Other councils in Perth's inner suburbs run their own registration, so check the council where you live.
Hot roads and parked cars
Perth summers get very hot. RSPCA WA says that if you cannot hold your hand on the ground comfortably for a full five seconds, it is too hot for your dog's paws. In January 2025 it reported 123 heat-related cruelty complaints since 1 December, and asked owners to leave dogs at home rather than in parked cars. Ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed, and for double-coated breeds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave to the skin.
Tick disease in northern WA
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development reports that the tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis was confirmed in Australian dogs for the first time in May 2020 in the Kimberley region, and has since been confirmed in dogs from the Pilbara, Gascoyne and northern Goldfields (page updated January 2025). Perth is not on that list. If you are taking your dog north, ask your vet about tick prevention, and check your dog for ticks when you get home.
Before the first appointment
- Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
- Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
- Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
- If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does dog grooming cost in Perth?
It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.
Does my dog need to be registered in Perth?
Yes. The City of Perth says dogs over three months of age must be registered with the council, and that registered dogs must also be microchipped. Registration is due by 1 November each year, with one-year, three-year and lifetime options.
Do groomers in Perth need a licence?
We could not confirm a state licence that applies to groomers, so we do not make a claim either way. Ask how long the groomer has worked, how tools and tables are cleaned and whether they groom your breed often.
How do I protect my dog from the heat?
Check the ground with your hand before a walk: if you cannot hold it there for five seconds, it is too hot for paws. Walk early or late, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
Is mobile grooming a good option?
A mobile groomer works from a van outside your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a trip across town, though it usually costs more than a salon.
What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?
Each groomer sets its own rules. Many ask for proof of up-to-date vaccinations, and some ask about kennel cough protection. Check before you book, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
