Choosing a groomer on the Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast's groomers range from neighbourhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that park outside your home. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.
Your dog's registration
Sunshine Coast Council says all cats and dogs must be registered every year and wear a Council-issued registration tag, with an annual registration period from 1 October to 30 September the following year. It also says the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 requires puppies to be registered at three months of age, and that new residents should register within 14 days. Council's page says the limit is two dogs per property, and you need to apply to Council for permission to keep more. Groomers often ask for proof of vaccination, so keep it handy along with your registration tag number.
Paralysis ticks
Paralysis ticks are a serious risk for dogs on the south-east Queensland coast. In October 2025 University of Queensland researchers, who studied more than 10,000 tick cases at vet hospitals in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Sydney's northern beaches, reported that the paralysis tick was found on the head, neck or ears in 73 per cent of dog patients, and advised searching there first. Signs include a changed voice or behaviour and wobbly back legs. Ask your groomer to tell you if they find a tick during a groom, and talk to your vet about year-round tick prevention.
Heat and humidity
Sunshine Coast summers are warm and humid, and beach days mean sand and salt. Book early-morning appointments, keep your dog out of parked cars, rinse salt off after a swim, and for double-coated breeds such as huskies and shepherds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave.
Before the first appointment
- Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
- Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
- Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
- If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does dog grooming cost on the Sunshine Coast?
It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.
Does my dog need to be registered on the Sunshine Coast?
Yes. Sunshine Coast Council says all cats and dogs must be registered every year and wear a Council-issued registration tag. The annual registration period runs from 1 October to 30 September.
How many dogs can I keep at home?
Sunshine Coast Council's page says the limit is two dogs per property, and you need to apply to Council for permission to keep more. Check the Council page for the current rules.
How do I protect my dog from paralysis ticks?
Talk to your vet about year-round tick prevention and search your dog every day, starting with the head, neck and ears, where University of Queensland researchers found most ticks. Tell your vet straight away if you see a tick or notice wobbly back legs.
Is mobile grooming a good option?
A mobile groomer works from a van outside your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a trip across the region, though it usually costs more than a salon.
What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?
Each groomer sets its own rules. Many ask for proof of vaccination, and some also ask about kennel cough. Check before you book, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
