Choosing a groomer in Calgary

Calgary's groomers range from neighbourhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that park outside your home. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.

Business licences

The City of Calgary says a business licence is not required for grooming an animal at the owner's premises, such as a groomer who comes to your home. A groomer who also keeps dogs at the place of business, such as for day care or overnight stays, does need a Kennel Service/Pet Dealer business licence from the City. A licence is not a measure of skill, so also ask how long the groomer has worked and whether they groom your breed often.

Your dog's licence

Cats and dogs three months or older need a City of Calgary licence. The City issues it through Animal Services, and you can buy or renew it online, by phone or in person. Groomers will usually ask for proof of rabies vaccination, and many boarding and day care businesses ask to see the licence too.

Winter cold and salt

Calgary Animal Services advises limiting outdoor time in extremely cold weather, shortening walks, and wiping your dog's paws with a damp cloth after walks if boots are not an option, because the salt and chemicals used to melt snow and ice can harm paws. Ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed so ice does not build up, and for double-coated breeds such as huskies and shepherds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave.

Before the first appointment

  • Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
  • Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
  • Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
  • If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dog grooming cost in Calgary?

It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.

Do groomers in Calgary need a business licence?

It depends. The City of Calgary says a licence is not required for grooming at the animal owner's premises, but a groomer who keeps animals at their place of business, for example for day care or overnight stays, needs a Kennel Service/Pet Dealer business licence.

Does my dog need a licence in Calgary?

Yes. Cats and dogs three months or older need a City of Calgary licence. You can buy or renew it online, by phone or in person through Animal Services.

How do I protect my dog's paws in winter?

Wipe your dog's paws with a damp cloth after walks on salted sidewalks, as Calgary Animal Services advises, and ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed. Dog boots help on long walks.

Is mobile grooming a good option?

A mobile groomer works from a van outside your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a trip across the city, though it usually costs more than a salon.

What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?

Groomers will usually ask for proof of rabies vaccination. Many also ask for DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough), and some ask about canine influenza, so check with the groomer when you book.
