Choosing a groomer in Toronto
Toronto's's groomers range from neighbourhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that park outside your home. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.
Business licences, now and from 2027
Today, the City of Toronto says that pet shops are the only animal-related businesses that must hold a business licence. That is changing: starting February 1, 2027, pet daycares, cat and dog groomers and boarding kennels will need a Pet Establishment licence, with standards for animal care, cleanliness and record keeping. Until then there is no City groomer licence to check, so ask how long the groomer has worked, how tools and tables are cleaned and whether they groom your breed often.
Your dog's licence
All dogs owned in Toronto must be licensed and wear a tag, and the City of Toronto says the licence must be renewed every year. Groomers and boarding businesses will often ask for proof of your dog's rabies vaccination, so keep it handy with the licence tag number.
Winter salt and summer heat
Toronto winters mean salted sidewalks. The City advises putting booties on dogs to protect paws from salt and ice, washing and drying their feet and stomach after walks, and never shaving a dog down to the skin in winter. In summer it warns that asphalt can get hot enough to burn a dog's paws, so exercise your dog at dawn and dusk, and never leave a dog in a parked car; if you see one, call 311. Ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed, and for double-coated breeds such as huskies and shepherds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave.
Before the first appointment
- Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
- Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
- Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
- If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does dog grooming cost in Toronto?
It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.
Do groomers in Toronto need a licence?
Not yet. Today the City of Toronto licenses only pet shops among animal-related businesses, but from February 1, 2027, groomers, pet daycares and kennels will need a Pet Establishment licence. Until then, ask about experience and hygiene.
Does my dog need a licence in Toronto?
Yes. All dogs and cats owned in Toronto must be licensed and wear a tag, and the licence must be renewed every year.
How do I protect my dog's paws in winter?
Wipe or rinse your dog's paws after walks on salted sidewalks, and ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed so ice and salt do not build up. Dog boots help on long walks.
Is mobile grooming a good option?
A mobile groomer works from a van outside your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a trip across town, though it usually costs more than a salon.
What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?
Each groomer sets its own rules. Many ask for proof of rabies vaccination, and some also ask for DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough). Check before you book, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
