Choosing a groomer in Windsor

Windsor's groomers range from neighbourhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that park outside your home. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.

Business licences

The City of Windsor's list of business licences includes pet shops, but the list does not name groomers. Ask the groomer which licences it holds. A licence is not a measure of skill, so also ask how long the groomer has worked and whether they groom your breed often.

Dog registration in Windsor

Windsor is different from most Ontario cities. The City now runs a voluntary dog licensing program, and says licensing is no longer mandatory for most dogs. Registering still helps: a tag makes it easier to get a lost dog home, and part of the fee goes to the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society. Registration is mandatory for dogs the City places on its Dog-at-Risk Registry, which covers dogs with violent or menacing behaviour, including those that have bitten or attacked. Dog ownership is still governed by By-law 245-2004. Groomers will often ask for proof of vaccinations, so keep your dog's records handy.

Parvovirus in Ontario

In July 2025 CTV News covered a parvovirus outbreak in an Ontario city, and the Worms & Germs blog discussed news reports of canine parvovirus in London, Ontario. The blog noted that parvovirus is endemic nearly everywhere there are dogs, that vaccination is the cornerstone of control, and that it is exceedingly rare to see the disease in a properly vaccinated dog. If you have a puppy still working through its vaccine series, ask your vet when it is safe to book a groom in Windsor.

Winter cold

Windsor winters bring freezing temperatures, snow and salted sidewalks. In January 2026 the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society reminded pet owners that extreme winter weather brings a risk of frostbite and hypothermia, that cats, puppies, seniors and short-coated animals are especially vulnerable, and that dogs should only be outside for short periods in extreme cold. It suggested watching for shivering or a dog holding up its paws. Wipe your dog's paws after walks, and ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed so ice and salt do not build up. For double-coated breeds such as huskies and shepherds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave.

Before the first appointment

  • Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
  • Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
  • Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
  • If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dog grooming cost in Windsor?

It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.

Does my dog need a licence in Windsor?

Not for most dogs. The City of Windsor says dog licensing is now voluntary, though registration is mandatory for dogs on the City's Dog-at-Risk Registry. A tag still helps get a lost dog home.

Is parvovirus a concern in Ontario?

In July 2025 news reports covered a parvovirus outbreak in London, Ontario. Vaccination is the best protection, and puppies that have not finished their vaccine series should avoid busy places with many dogs.

How do I protect my dog's paws in winter?

Wipe your dog's paws after walks on salted sidewalks, and ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed so ice and salt do not build up. Dog boots help on long walks.

Is mobile grooming a good option?

A mobile groomer works from a van outside your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a trip across town, though it usually costs more than a salon.

What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?

Ask each groomer, because requirements differ. Many ask for proof of rabies, DHPP (which includes parvovirus and distemper) and Bordetella (kennel cough).
