Choosing dog boarding in Los Angeles

Dog boarding in Los Angeles ranges from small kennels to large pet resorts with group play yards and private rooms. Visit before you book: a good facility will happily show you where dogs sleep, play and eat.

Permits

In the City of Los Angeles, any premises that keeps four or more dogs needs a Dog Kennel permit from LA Animal Services. In unincorporated parts of LA County, boarding facilities are licensed by the County's Department of Animal Care and Control. It is fair to ask to see the permit.

Vaccinations and canine flu

California law requires dogs to be vaccinated against rabies from three months old. Most boarding facilities also ask for distemper and parvovirus (DHPP) and Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines, and many ask for canine influenza too.

Canine influenza H3N2 has caused outbreaks in LA County, including one in 2021 and 2022 that affected more than 1,300 dogs, and an outbreak at a boarding facility in April 2025. LA County Public Health strongly recommends vaccinating against it before boarding. The first course is usually two doses a few weeks apart, so plan ahead.

What to ask

  • Where do dogs sleep, and is someone on site overnight?
  • Is play time in groups or one dog at a time, and how are dogs matched for group play?
  • How do they keep dogs cool on hot days?
  • What happens if your dog gets sick, and which vet do they use?
  • Can you bring your dog's own food, bedding or medication?

Prices and busy dates

Expect roughly $45 to $80 a night, with higher rates over holidays. The Fourth of July is a busy time, and fireworks frighten many dogs: book early, check that your dog's microchip and ID tag details are up to date (LA Animal Services has tips), and tell the facility if your dog is scared of loud noises.

Your dog's license

The City of Los Angeles requires every dog over four months old to be licensed, which needs a current rabies certificate. Take copies of the license and vaccination records when you drop your dog off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dog boarding cost in Los Angeles?

Roughly $45 to $80 a night, depending on the facility and the type of room. Expect higher rates over holidays such as the Fourth of July.

What vaccinations does my dog need for boarding?

Rabies is required by California law for dogs from three months old. Most facilities also ask for DHPP (distemper and parvovirus) and Bordetella (kennel cough). LA County Public Health strongly recommends the canine influenza vaccine before boarding; its first course is usually two doses a few weeks apart, so plan ahead.

Do dog boarding facilities in Los Angeles need a permit?

Yes. In the City of Los Angeles, any premises keeping four or more dogs needs a Dog Kennel permit from LA Animal Services. In unincorporated parts of LA County, boarding facilities are licensed by the County's Department of Animal Care and Control.

How far ahead should I book?

For summer, the Fourth of July and the winter holidays, book several weeks ahead, because popular facilities fill up. At other times, call to check availability.

Should I visit before booking?

Yes. Ask to see where dogs sleep and play, who is on site overnight, and how they handle hot days. Some facilities offer a trial day or a short first stay, which helps nervous dogs settle in.

What should I pack for my dog's stay?

Your dog's usual food (a sudden change can upset their stomach), any medication with written instructions, copies of their vaccination records and license, and your vet's contact details. A familiar blanket or toy can help too.
