Choosing a groomer in Ontario

Ontario's groomers range from neighborhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that come to your door. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.

Your dog's license

Ontario's animal services are provided by the Animal Resource Center of the Inland Empire (ARC), which serves the cities of Ontario, Chino and Montclair and unincorporated San Bernardino County. ARC's licensing page says licensing is legally required and that licensed pets are held longer at the shelter, and its online licensing portal says pet licenses are mandatory in the cities ARC serves and that you need proof of a rabies vaccination. California law, as San Diego Humane Society summarizes it (Health and Safety Code section 121690), requires dogs to be vaccinated against rabies and licensed within 30 days after reaching four months of age. Groomers will ask for rabies proof too.

Training and experience

Groomer training varies, so ask how long the groomer has worked, where they trained and whether they groom your breed often. Groomers will ask for rabies proof too.

Summer heat

California's Office of Emergency Services advises never leaving pets in a car, even with the windows down, and says the inside of a car can reach temperatures in excess of 150 degrees in a matter of minutes. It suggests planning outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day, early morning and evening, and says that if the sidewalk is too hot for you to walk barefoot, it is too hot for your pet. For double-coated breeds such as huskies and shepherds, ask your groomer for a de-shed rather than a shave, and book early-morning appointments in summer.

Canine flu

Canine influenza (H3N2) was first detected in California in 2015, initially in Orange County, according to a March 2026 advisory from Los Angeles County Public Health. That advisory strongly recommends that dogs be fully vaccinated against it before entering boarding kennels, dog daycare or dog parks. Ask your vet whether the flu shot makes sense for your dog, and ask a groomer whether they separate dogs that are coughing.

Before the first appointment

  • Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
  • Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
  • Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
  • If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.
  • Ask how long the groomer has worked and whether they groom your breed often.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dog grooming cost in Ontario?

It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.

Does my dog need a license in Ontario?

Yes. The Animal Resource Center of the Inland Empire, which serves Ontario, says licensing is legally required, and its licensing portal says you need proof of a rabies vaccination.

What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?

Every groomer sets its own rules, so ask when you book. Rabies proof is the most common request, and many also ask for DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough). Reschedule if your dog is coughing.

How do I keep my dog cool in summer?

Book early-morning appointments, never leave your dog in a parked car, and walk it on grass or in the shade when the pavement is hot. For double-coated breeds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave.

Is mobile grooming a good option?

A mobile groomer works from a van outside your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a trip across town, though it usually costs more than a salon.

How do I choose a groomer?

Visit or call first. Ask how long the groomer has worked, whether they groom your breed often, how dogs are dried, and what happens if your dog gets stressed.
