Choosing dog boarding in Portland

Dog boarding in and around Portland ranges from small kennels to pet resorts and day care centers with overnight stays. Visit before you book: a good facility will happily show you where dogs sleep, play and eat, and how it keeps them comfortable in every season.

Multnomah County licenses animal facilities

Multnomah County Animal Services requires an annual animal facility license. The county defines an animal facility as a site operated for boarding and training, among other uses, and says it includes doggie daycares. A county officer inspects the facility. Ask a boarding kennel or day care whether it holds a current county license, and still visit before you book.

Vaccines

Most facilities ask for rabies, DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough), and many ask for canine influenza, whose first course is two doses a few weeks apart. Ask which vaccines a facility requires well before your trip, and how it separates a dog that starts coughing. In January 2024 the Oregon Department of Agriculture told its Board of Agriculture that it had been investigating an atypical respiratory disease in Oregon dogs since the previous August, with over 200 case reports from veterinarians and no known cause. Cases have since eased, but the lesson holds: keep vaccines current, ask a groomer or kennel how it separates a coughing dog, and keep your own dog home if it is coughing.

What to ask

  • Where do dogs sleep, and is someone on site overnight?
  • Is play time in groups or one dog at a time, and how are groups matched?
  • How do they keep dogs cool in a heat wave and dry in the rainy months?
  • Which vet do they use in an emergency?
  • Can you bring your dog's own food, bedding or medication?

Busy dates and your dog's license

Facilities fill up for summer, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, so book early. Bring your dog's vaccination records and its Multnomah County license; the county code requires dogs to be licensed within 30 days of turning six months old or of moving into the county. In summer, never leave your dog in a parked car on the way: the county advises against it, even with the engine running.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are boarding kennels licensed in Multnomah County?

Yes. Multnomah County requires an annual animal facility license for sites that board or train animals, including doggie daycares, and inspects them. Ask a facility if its license is current, and still visit before you book.

What vaccinations does my dog need for boarding?

Most facilities ask for rabies, DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough), and many ask for canine influenza. The first canine flu course is two doses a few weeks apart, so plan ahead.

How much does dog boarding cost in Portland?

Prices vary with the facility and the type of room, so ask for a quote. Private suites cost more than standard kennels, and many places charge more over holidays.

How far ahead should I book?

For summer, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, book several weeks ahead, because popular facilities fill up.

Should I visit before booking?

Yes. Ask to see where dogs sleep and play, how they keep dogs dry and comfortable, and who is on site overnight. Some facilities offer a trial day, which helps nervous dogs settle in.

What should I pack for my dog's stay?

Your dog's usual food, any medication with written instructions, copies of its vaccination records and its Multnomah County license, and your vet's contact details. A familiar blanket or toy can help too.
