Choosing a groomer in Richmond
Richmond's groomers range from neighborhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that work from your driveway. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.
What Virginia law says about groomers
Virginia's animal care law makes a groomer responsible for giving an animal the care the law requires. If a pet becomes ill or injured while with a groomer, the groomer must provide emergency veterinary treatment; the owner bears the reasonable and necessary cost, unless the injury resulted from the groomer's failure to provide that care or from the groomer's own actions, in which case the groomer pays (Va. Code 3.2-6518).
Experience matters too
A legal duty of care is not a measure of skill, so ask how long the groomer has worked, where they trained and whether they groom your breed often. Before the first visit:
- Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
- Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
- Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
- If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.
Your dog's license
The City of Richmond says all cats and dogs living in the city are required to be licensed and to have a current rabies vaccination, and that the license must be renewed every year. Richmond also requires cats and dogs over six months old to be spayed or neutered unless the owner has a breeding permit from Richmond Animal Care and Control. Virginia law requires every county and city to tax dog ownership by ordinance (Va. Code 3.2-6528), and a license tag cannot be issued without evidence of rabies vaccination (Va. Code 3.2-6526). Groomers will ask for proof of rabies vaccination too.
Parvovirus
In August 2024, WWBT reported that a deadly virus among dogs was spreading across central Virginia, with the Petersburg Animal Shelter closing for two weeks to clean and treat a parvovirus outbreak. Parvo is most dangerous for young puppies, so keep your dog's vaccines current, ask your groomer which ones they require and reschedule if your dog is unwell.
Summer heat and winter cold
Richmond summers are hot and humid, so book early-morning appointments, never leave your dog in a parked car, and for double-coated breeds such as huskies and shepherds, ask for a de-shed rather than a shave: the undercoat protects them from heat and sunburn. In winter, wipe your dog's paws after walks on salted sidewalks and ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does dog grooming cost in Richmond?
It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.
What should I ask a groomer before booking?
Ask how long they have groomed, whether they know your breed, how dogs are dried and how they handle a nervous dog. Tell them about your dog's health, age and temperament.
Does my dog need a license in Richmond?
Yes. The City of Richmond says all cats and dogs living in the city must be licensed and have a current rabies vaccination, and the license is renewed every year.
Who pays if my dog is hurt at the groomer?
Under Virginia law, a groomer must provide emergency veterinary treatment if a pet is hurt in its care. The groomer pays if the injury resulted from its failure to give required care or from its own actions; otherwise the owner bears the reasonable and necessary cost.
What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?
Groomers will ask for proof of rabies vaccination, and many also ask for DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough). Ask before you book.
Is mobile grooming a good option?
A mobile groomer works from a van at your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a drive, though it usually costs more than a salon.
