Choosing a groomer in Seattle

Seattle's groomers range from neighborhood salons and pet-store grooming counters to mobile vans that work from your driveway. A full groom usually covers a bath, haircut, nail trim and ear cleaning; most groomers also offer bath-only visits, de-shedding and quick tidy-ups between full grooms.

Ask about experience

Before the first visit, ask how long the groomer has worked, where they trained and whether they groom your breed often.

  • Tell the groomer about your dog's health, age and temperament.
  • Ask how dogs are dried; if a cage dryer is used, someone should check the dog often.
  • Ask which vaccines they require, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
  • If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Your dog's license

Seattle requires every dog to be licensed: Seattle Municipal Code 9.25.050 covers dogs and cats, and not renewing can bring a $125 citation. Licenses are issued for one year, and you can buy or renew online, by mail or in person through the Seattle Animal Shelter. Groomers will also ask for proof of rabies vaccination.

Seasons and coughs

The Seattle Animal Shelter's weather tips are a good local guide. After rain or snow, dry your dog thoroughly, paws included; after a walk on de-iced sidewalks, check paws, mouths and bellies, because the chemicals can burn. In summer, never leave a dog in a parked car, and use the shelter's hand test on pavement: if you cannot hold your palm on it for 10 seconds, your dog should not walk on it. Ask your groomer to keep the fur between the pads trimmed, and for double-coated breeds ask for a de-shed rather than a shave.

In December 2023 the Washington State Department of Agriculture said veterinarians had sent it 16 reports of an atypical canine respiratory illness across the state, with reports from King, Pierce, Clark and Spokane counties among others. Its advice for owners: keep your dog fully vaccinated, avoid crowds of dogs and keep yours away from sick dogs. If your dog has a cough, skip the groomer and call your vet. Details are in the state's December 1, 2023 update.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dog grooming cost in Seattle?

It depends on your dog's size, coat and condition, so ask each groomer for a quote. Large dogs, thick or curly coats and matted fur cost more, and a bath-only visit costs less than a full groom.

What should I ask a groomer before booking?

Ask how long they have worked, where they trained, whether they groom your breed often, how dogs are dried and how they handle nervous dogs. If the coat is badly matted, ask about a short clip rather than hours of brushing out.

Does my dog need a license in Seattle?

Yes. Seattle Municipal Code 9.25.050 requires dogs and cats to be licensed, and not renewing can bring a $125 citation. Licenses are issued for one year.

How do I protect my dog's paws in wet and hot weather?

Dry your dog's paws after rain or snow, and check them after walks on de-iced sidewalks, because the chemicals can burn. In summer, use the 10-second palm test on pavement and never leave a dog in a parked car.

Is mobile grooming a good option?

A mobile groomer works from a van at your home, usually with one dog at a time. That suits anxious or older dogs and saves a drive, though it usually costs more than a salon.

What vaccinations does my dog need for grooming?

Groomers will ask for proof of rabies vaccination, and many also ask for DHPP and Bordetella (kennel cough). Ask before you book, and reschedule if your dog is coughing.
